In metropolitan France there exist seven " regional languages " : occitan, catalan, breton, basque, corsican, flamish and the german dialect in Alsace. Occitan due to its geographic extension is the most important.Unlike the other european countries, none of these languages benefits some measures of particular protection or valorization. A 1951 law (loi Deixonne) only allows the teaching of these languages in very precarious conditions. In 1992, an article was added to the French Constitution notifying that only " the French is the language of the Republic " (article 2).Since the decentralisation-laws in 1982, some local authorities, , have undertaken some promoting actions, but they seldom benefit from the real help of the administrations.
