Max Roqueta
A few brief, biographical landmarks


Born on the 8th of december 1908 at Argelliers, in the middle valley of Hérault, in southern France, Max Roqueta had an early appeal for literature and writing. After secondary studies in the Grammar school of Montpellier, he pursued medical studies in that very university where Rabelais was once a student and Rondelet a famous professor. In 1928, while he was a medical student, aged 20, he founded " Le Nouveau Languedoc " which was both an association of languedocian students and a group of regionalistic action, with Jean Lesaffre as a chairman and Roger Barthe and himself as vice-chairmen.Moreover, he works as the secretary of the corporative section, (the " Corpo " of the Medicine faculty), and as the representative of the medical students at the General Association of the Students of Montpellier (A.G.E.M.).

From January 1928 to november 1930, Lou Libre d'Or des Dissatiés reports his taking part in meetings and " poupianades " of that jolly society of Montpellier, together with Jean Tulet, Josep Sebastià Pons as well as the foreman : L'Escoutaire : François Dezeuze.He's being a resident medical in Toulon, then, immediately after, accomplishing his military service there, impeeded his occitanist activity from 1933 to 1935. A member of " La Societat d'Estudis Occitans " (S.E.O.), from 1936 to the war he took the part of chief editor of the review : Occitania, " organ mesadier de la joventut occitanista " directed by Charles Camproux and Marcel Carrières.From 1936 to 1946, he was a doctor in Aniane (Hérault), then he pursued his career up to 1974 as a school health doctor as well as a consultant at the National Health services in Montpellier, a town where he lives at 2, rue de l'Ancien Courrier.Together with Doctor Ismaël Girard and Camille Soula, he founded l'Institut d'Estudis Occitans (I.E.O.) in 1945. He succeeded Jean Cassou at its chairmanchip.

From september 1954 on, he was the director of the new occitan and catalan quarterly review : Vida nova.In 1962 in Avignon, during a congress attended by Miguel Angel Asturias, Pablo Neruda, Henry Miller and André Chamson, he founded with Jean Camp's and Jorgi Reboul's help, the Pen-Club of occitan language, which he presided later on.From 1978 to 1983, he also edited the literary review Oc. Some other names should be added to the list of those previously quoted. The names of those, whose strong influence and longlasting friendship Max Roqueta claims. It concerns the writer Josep Sebastiá Pons (1886-1962), the sculptor Henri Frère (1908-1986), both from Roussillon and the painter Georges Dezeuze from Montpellier.

His first writing, that was published, came out in the review La Campana de Magalouna. His work spans over 72 years, through which he has endlessly been writing and publishing.A large part of his poems and prose were first published in reviews, before being gathered in collections and volumes.
